Hello :)
How are you all? :)
So on Wednesday we had a Korean Culture Class. We heard a bit about the history, like about the invention of Hangul, the writing system, about Admiral Lee Soon Shin who freed Korea from a Japanese Invasion and about a few other things. We learned how to bow properly for New Year's Day and tasted homemade traditional snacks :) And, of course, we got dressed up in Hanboks :))
On Friday was my birthday :) I ate "Miyeok-guk" (seewead-soup) and a special rice (with red not sweet beans in it). If I would eat it I would have gotten fish as well. Koreans eat Miyeok-guk on birthday and during and after pregnancy. It is supposed to be very healthy and 'clean' our blood (that is at least what I understood when my Hostmother explained it to me.
Then I went to school, where my friends gave me a huge cake and we ate it together. I also recieved warm socks, school slippers and "saegilbbang" which is a korean tradition. It basically is just hitting the one who's birthday it is. It hurts but it is fun for everyone else.
Then I had korean classes, my teacher wanted to give me a present but she forgot it at home :) So I will get it next week. :)) After Korean class I went to the Korean Talk thing, where they made me wear a crown and I got small presents from a friend of mine (she was a exchange student before, she went to America last year) and after the Talk finshed another friend, whom I met at the Korean Talk, bought me food and coffee :)
On Saturday I had my birthday party at my house. My foreign friends and two Koreans came. We mostly just ate, snacks, chicken, cake, icecream.... and talked and played "Truth or dare" It was a fun day :) And I got super cute presents :))
I like birthdays :)) I wish I had more than just one every year :))
All the best :)
Maria
